Breathing in Confinement: Siamak Mirzaei, an activist from Azerbaijan Province in Iran, was released from Evin Prison on Thursday, September 2. He has been serving his one-year prison sentence since January 2021.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, on Thursday, September 2, 2021, Siamak Mirzaei, an activist from Azerbaijan Province in Iran, was sent on a leave followed by release from Evin Prison. He was sentenced to one year in prison, 90 days of which was yet to be completed.

Siamak Mirzaei, 40, born in the City of Moghan, is a Bachelor of Animal Production Engineering who had been banned from studying in master’s degree.

Siamak Mirzaei had previously also spent three years in prison and was released with one month of delay on July 28, 2019, to be deported to the City of Qaen. The reason for the delay in his release was the opening of new cases against him in prison.

As Mr. Mirzaei was spending his exile in Qaen, his trial was held in absentia on December 2, 2019, in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Afshari. He was sentenced to one year in prison as well as two years of ban from leaving the country, and from the membership in political and social groups or parties on charge of “propaganda activities against the regime.”

His protest was rejected on February 26, 2020, by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, and his sentence was increased to 1 year and 10 days in prison, along with the additional punishments mentioned in the previous sentence. Finally, the verdict was upheld by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals in Tehran.

On July 12, 2020, his exile period to the city of Qaen was completed.

Siamak Mirzaei was arrested by security forces near his home in Ardabil on December 28, 2020, and two days later, on a phone call to his family, he announced that he had been transferred to quarantine ward 8 of Evin Prison to serve his sentence.

Mr. Mirzaei on May 19 of this year also was sent on leave on bail, and returned to Evin Prison on Saturday, June 29, at the end of his leave.
