Three years in prison for Peyman Farhangian

Breathing in Confinement: Peyman Farhangian, a poet and labor activist, on charges such as “forming a four-member telegram group”, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, 7 years of which will be suspended, and therefore, he has to spend three years in prison.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Peyman Farhangian, a resident of Kiashahr port in Gilan province, was arrested by Ministry of Intelligence agents on June 20, 2020, and in July of the same year, was released released from Lahijan Prison on bail of 400 million Tomans.
Mr. Farhangian was sentenced to 38 years in prison in absentia, by the court of first instance in Criminal Court 102 of Astaneh-Ashrafieh. His sentence, however, was reduced to 11 years by the Court of Appeals. Pursuant to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, the most severe punishment, i.e., 10 years in prison, for forming a group with more than two members inside the country with the intent of disrupting the national security will be applicable to him from which 7 years, has been suspended for 5 years.
This sentence which has been recently notified to him, was issued on May 15, 2021, by Branch 18 of the Court of Appeals in Gilan Province, presided over by Judge Ali Asghar Pourghasem as well as Hossein Gholizadeh Sarcheshmeh as a counsellor.
Mr. Farhangian initially faced several charges in the court of first instance where he was sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison, but after reconsidering his case, the court sentenced him to 11 years in prison, including 7 years of suspended imprisonment and 4 years of serving in prison.
However, after the objection of his lawyer, Mr. Hossein Taj, the case was referred to the Court of Appeals in Gilan where his 7 years suspended sentence was upheld, but his imprisonment sentence was reduced to 3 years.
The court charged Mr. Farhangian with forming a telegram group with the intent of “disrupting the national security.”
