At Least 97 Prisoners Executed in Iran During Last 30 Days

Breathing in Confinement – At least 97 people have been executed in Iran, during the first month of Iranian New Year in Farvardin 1394, (21st March to 21st April 2015)

According to the Center of Statistics of “Breathing in a Confinement”; on 24th March, the wave of executions started with the execution of 4 prisoners in prison of Maragheh and at the end of the first month of the year it has become more intense.

According to this report, just during the last 10 days, at least 69 prisoners in different cities of Iran have been hanged, including 2 public executions.

Also, during this month, death penalty has been implemented for an Afghanistan citizen, in Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj.

77 of these prisoners had been charged with drug related crimes, 9 of them were charged with murder and 1 had been charged with armed robbery.

This is while, Iranian official media have reported only 16 of these executions and the other 81 have been reported by independent human rights news agencies.

According to the Ahmed Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran; the number of executions in Iran in the past decade has been increased from 99 in 2004 to 687 cases in 2013 reached.

Ahmad Shaheed in his latest report had described the increasing rate of executions in Iran as “Alarming” and called for a halt in this process.

Recently  Amnesty International, in its annual report on the death penalty in the world, has stated the Islamic republic of Iran as the; “Vanguard of death penalty in the World”.
