Akbar Naeimi arrested and transferred to Evin Prison

Breathing in Confinement: After being arrested in Tabriz, Akbar Naeimi was transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran. He was arrested by security forces on July 19, 2021, in Tabriz. Mr. Naeimi had previously been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran to a total of 9 years and 8 months in prison, which was later upheld by Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals. However, as per the principle of aggregation of sentences, 5 years of his sentence will be enforceable.
According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Akbar Naeimi, a cultural and environmental activist, from the City of Khoy in Azerbaijan, informed his family through a short phone call, that to serve his sentence, he had been arrested on July 19 in Tabriz, and transferred to Evin Prison in Tehran, and that he was being held in quarantine at Evin Prison. Mr. Naeimi has been arrested to serve his five-year sentence, while neither he nor his lawyers had been notified of this.
Mr. Naeimi on charges of “membership in an illegal group,” “conspiracy against the national security,” and “propaganda activities in support of the opposition groups of Islamic Republic,” was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, respectively to 5 years, 4 years, and 8 months (a total of 9 years and 8 months) in prison. He in addition was sentenced to a two-year ban from leaving the country, and from membership in political or social groups, parties and factions.” Furthermore, he was sentenced to “preparing a 90-page research on the subject of colonial policy of dividing the people according to ethnicity, and the rational and religious necessity of the unity of Muslim Ummah, with citing at least in every 2 pages to books licensed by the Ministry of Islamic Guidance, such as “Islam, nationality and ethnicity from the perspective of Imam Khomeini – ethnicity in Iran”. The sentence was later upheld in Branch 36 of the Court of Appeals in Tehran. And as per the principle of aggregation of sentences, 5 years of this sentence will be enforceable.
Mr. Naeimi had been previously arrested on January 22, 2020 in Tehran, and after about two months was released on bail, awaiting the court’s decision.
Akbar Naimi is a post-graduate in thermal engineering and was employed as a technician for Homa Airlines at the time of his arrest. He, however, was fired after being temporarily released from prison.
