Breathing in Confinement: On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Branch 24 of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, headed by Mohammad Reza Amouzadeh, summoned the Civil Rights Activist, Atena Daemi, imprisoned in Evin, in relation to the case which has been opened against her while in prison. She, however, refused to appear in the court.
“Atena Daemi, the Civil Rights Activist imprisoned in Evin, refused to attend the court hearing for the new case which has been opened against her by the Revolutionary Guards. She announced the reason for her refusal as the outbreak of COVID-19 disease in the country as well as the court’s non-compliance with the law in considering the standard interval between the dates of the summons and the trial,“ reported Breathing in Confinement the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran.
In December 2019, for a period of 15 days, Atena had been transferred from the women’s ward of Evin Prison to the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center, called Ward 2A. The transfer was following the sit-in of eight women political prisoners in the women’s ward of Evin Prison on the occasion of the 40th day of the death of November 2019 protesters and for the purpose of sympathy with their bereaved families. In this regard, she was charged with “conspiracy to disrupt the security of the country”, “propaganda against the regime” and “disturbing the order of the prison”.
Previously also, on March 11, 2020, because of the same reason, Ms. Daemi had not attended the hearing after being summoned to the court.
