Houshamand Alipour goes on a hunger strike in Sanandaj prison

Breathing in Confinement: Houshmand Alipour, a political prisoner in Sanandaj, has been on a hunger strike since November 16, 2021, to protest the interference of the Intelligence  Office in his case, and as well, the rejection of his request for leave and meeting with his family by the office.

According to “Breathing in Confinement”, the news organ of the Prisoners’  Rights League in Iran, Houshmand Alipour, a political prisoner in Sanandaj prison, has been on a hunger strike since November 16, 2021.

The political prisoner has gone on strike to protest the rejection of his leave request as well as the ban on visiting his family. He was sentenced to 38 months in prison by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court after his death sentence was overturned in the Supreme Court. Mr. Alipour met with his family only once during the whole period of his detention.

On August 3, 2018, Houshmand Alipour along with Mohammad Ostad Qader was arrested by security forces on charge of membership in an opposition group. Four days later, Islamic Republic TV broadcast a program in which Houshmand Alipour and Mohammad Ostad Qader confessed to their role in the attack on a security base in Saqqez.

On November 19, 2018, after about 110 days in detention, Mr. Alipour was transferred from the Intelligence Office in Sanandaj to Saqez Prison. He visited his family only once during his detention. In January 2019, Houshmand Alipour was finally transferred from Saqez Prison to Sanandaj Prison in order to appear in the court. He was finally sentenced to death in January 2020, by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj, on charge of “fight against the Islamic ruler,” and Mohammad Ostad Qader to five years in prison. Mohammad Ostad Qader was finally released from prison in late March 2021.

Houshmand Alipour’s case however, was overturned by the Supreme Court and  the case was referred to Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Sanandaj as the court of same status where a hearing was held on September 20, 2020, and he was sentenced to 38 months in prison.
