Hunger Strikers at Uremia Prison threatened Once Again

Breathing in Confinement – Manager of Central Prison of Uremia has attended ward 12 in this prison and has threatened political prisoners that if they do not end their hunger strike they will face a strong backlash.

According to the report of “Breathing in Confinement,” On 18th December, Mr. Alavi, Manager of Central Prison of Uremia has gone to ward 12 of the prison and after promising to find solution for the problems has attempted to severely threaten the prisoners who are on hunger strike.

In this regard, an informed source told “Breathing in Confinement’s” reporter: “Today (18th December) coinciding with the twenty-ninth day of hunger strike by the political prisoners of, Alavi attended ward 12 and at first promised the prisoners that if they end hunger strike, he will pursue and solve all their problems.”

This source added: “The prisoners said that they are going to end their hunger strike after achieving their demands, and then Mr. Alavi replied in a serious tone by threatening the prisoners with; sending them to exile, opening a new case for them and transferring them to solitary confinements of the intelligence service.”

On the other hand, according to reports Ebrahim Isapour and Ali Ahmad Suleiman had been transferred to the prison infirmary due to serious condition but as they refused to get IV fluid, they were taken back to the ward 12.

Ebraham Isapour, Kurdish political prisoners was arrested on 7th July 2011 and subsequently had been sentenced to death. His death sentence has been upheld in March 2014 by the Supreme Court which has sparked concerns about the execution.

Ali Ahmad Suleiman, who suffers from lumbar disc and eye disease and needs surgery, was arrested in the fall of 2005 and subsequently was sentenced to death. This Kurdish political prisoner’s sentence also has been upheld in August 2013 by the Supreme Court and has been sent to Law-enforcement office.

That is to say, currently 24 political prisoners are on hunger strike in ward 12 of Central Prison of Uremia. These prisoners have gone on hunger strike since 20th November to protest against the “dissolution of political prisoners’ ward” and “pressures from the Ministry of Intelligence on prisoners and the families of prisoners”.
