Sentence of thirteen months in prison for Payam Shakiba, without any legal evidence

Breathing in Confinement: Payam Shakiba, a former political prisoner, was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to thirteen months in prison, ban from leaving the country for 2 years, prohibition of membership in groups and parties, and seizing his cell phones and laptops.

Mr. Shakiba was arrested by the security forces on June 14, 2021, and three weeks later, on July 4,  he was released on 100 million Tomans bail.

 

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Payam Shakiba, a former political prisoner, was sentenced to imprisonment as well as being banned from leaving the country.

 

The sentence was issued on September 25, 2021 by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, and was notified to Mr. Shakiba’s lawyer. According to the verdict, Mr. Shakiba on charge of “propaganda activities against the regime,” has been sentenced to 13 months in prison,  2 years of ban from leaving the country, prohibition of membership in groups and parties and seizing his cell phones and laptops.

As per an informed source, the verdict has been issued without any legal evidence. ” Over the last four months after his release, Mr. Shakiba had no activities which could led him to be legally prosecuted, arrested or convicted,” said the source.

 

About 4 months after his release from Rajai Shahr prison, Payam Shakiba was arrested by security forces on June 14, 2021, and 3 weeks later, on July 4, he was temporarily released on 100 million Tomans bail, awaiting the trial. The hearing on his charges was held on September 17, 2021 in Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari.

 

Previously, Payam Shakiba had been arrested by security forces on February 22, 2017. Later in December 2017, he was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Tehran to 11 years in prison on charges of “acting against national security through conspiracy and propaganda against the regime.” The verdict was later upheld by the Court of Appeals. While in prison, a new case was opened against him and the intelligence service prevented his release. He however, was released from Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj on February 3, 2021, after being acquitted in the new case.
