Breathing in Confinement: Iraj Hatami, a security prisoner in Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, has been on a hunger strike since Sunday, May 30, to protest non- consideration of the period he spent in detention, in duration of his prison sentence.

According to Breathing in Confinement, the news organ of the Prisoners’ Rights League in Iran, Mr. Hatami was arrested by security forces in October 2010 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Beforehand however, he had been  held in a military detention center for 2 years and 3 months. His hunger strike is to protest against being held in prison despite completion of his 10-year prison sentence and ignorance of the 2-year and 3-month period of his detention in a military detention center, which, if had been considered, he should have been released last year.

Iraj Hatami was arrested by security forces on October 18, 2010 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for “collaborating with hostile government of the United States.” Prior to his arrest, Mr. Hatami, an employee of Ministry of Defense, had spent more than two years in a military detention center. Whereas if this 2-year and 3-month detention had been calculated, he would have been released 10 months ago.
